Cross-posted from another forum I visit:

For interested mappers, I've just found conclusive proof that Valve has a better version of Hammer that they're keeping from us. All of these were found in the Source Film Maker platform files:

Posted Image
Icon (note the different color scheme and anti-aliased edges not found in current hammer icons)

Posted Image
The first of several icons labelled "terrain tool," which seems to be a better version of displacements. This one depicts a smoother.

Another terrain tool icon. Something for extruding a face, doesn't correspond to any current hammer function I can think of.

Posted Image
Control cages are only used for subdivided meshes. New hammer has better interactive subdivision?

Finally, some kind of indicator for what mode the clipping tool is in.

Posted Image
File name says "paint tool", that doesn't sound like textures nor decals to me, but rather something new.

File name says "scale tool,"...scaling is a pretty basic operation with the selection tool in hammer as it is, does this mean they've reworked some of the most basic parts?

I found all of these in game\platform\tools\images\hammer\

Interesting. I hope this gets released eventually.I'm guessing that that last one refers to scaling static meshes, a lot of other editors support this but Source doesn't. That would be very convinient.

I think this is mostly an update for Dota2. Now way you want to make those maps out of the old displacements.

I think it's cool how people dig up this stuff.

It would be nice if they released it, but given how Hammer updates always result in a backlash from various modders for breaking stuff, it doesn't supprise me they are sitting on it. Plus given how nice recent Source games are looking and how complex the maps are, I suspect there is something they are using that is far removed from what Hammer is at the moment.

By the way: I didn't find this. It should have said in the quote that a guy by the name of p0rtalplayer found it, but for some reason it didn't.
