Hello,
this is something I dislike since many versions and with the new morter I dislike a bit more. I love balance through situational picks but atm the smg gunner in the tower has: inacurate fire, is always alone, has a low damage output and you can kill him pretty easy. I think with a AR2 he would have a great supressing role in the early stage and might be a good choice in more situations. Currently he is mostly a wasted spawn you could use always in rounds with more then 1 rebel for something better.

The problem with that is that it makes him more noticeable. A lot of times he'll be able to chip away at the rebels' healths without being notciced if you can pressure the them well through that area. The shiny AR2 bolts will draw attention quickly and he'll be downed too fast for the dps to make up for it. If you REALLY wanted area suppression, you should have suggested a mounted gunner.

Don't the mounted gunners also use an AR2?
Mounted guns have infinite clip and somewhat better accuracy, at least that's what it says on the wiki. They also tend to sit in well-fortified positions.

Mounted guns use the AR2 Model but can be adjusted with accuracy, damage, etc. That's just the Func_Tank entity, Func_tankpulselaser was what I was using in the cut section of superfortress, it shoots colored lasers. Func_Tankrocket also exists, I believe, and does exactly what it sounds like it would do. Regular func_tank would be reccomended, but supposedly it doesn't work currently. Pulselaser works fine in my tests.

Well regarding the point ScrooLewse made earlier: the SMG does "chip away" at the GP's HP, but my argument is that with the addition of the Mortar cannon (and the already available annoying manhacks), the "tower dude" just seems insanely underpowered and will likely never be used.
I think the latest Breach offers enough cover (+ the Riot Shield) that any group of players with just a bit of experience playing it should have no trouble dealing with incoming AR2 fire (mounted or otherwise). That's why I agree with ponpat in that it should be changed.
We need to agree on this soon so get it in before release.

Yeah a mounted gun rly might be better, hadn't it in my mind when thinking about the problem. Also, if his "skill" is rly adjustable that "easy" like Coppermantis said it might be the better choice to change the tower based on the number of players. Else it would be one man standing on a tower agains always a different amount of enemys... But think at first the result of the simple change of the weapon to the ar2 which is already made in the svn, should be tested the next test time.
