What do you mean exactly by "does nothing"? Does it just hang/freeze? Did you wait a few minutes just to make sure it's not still working in the background?
Does the compile log mention anything?

If it is a large, complex map, compiling could take as long as ten minutes. It also depends on your settings for compiling. If it is a full, final version of the map, the VIS setting should be set to normal, though this will take a VERY long time to compile. And for the RAD setting it should also be set to normal. If you are playtesting, both these settings should be set to fast.
If it freezes/hangs on you, just wait, you may think its crashed on you, but it REALLY takes that long, no joke.

Compiling is a VERY stressful task on the computer. Even the best of optimized maps can 'freeze' the computer for several seconds. My advice, make sure your map isn't rendering unused/unseen brushes. When you do compile, do not touch anything. Even minimizing Hammer during this time can be enough to crash it. Your computer needs all its resources at this time and needs to be doing as little as possible.
This is not always true. My map, though not overly large (and quite basic at the moment), compiles in a matter of seconds on the normal setting. It is about optimization my friend.
