The Big Thread for Small Ideas (v2.0)

WAXT's Photo WAXT 24 Oct 2010

Now there seems to be quite a few little questions and ideas popping up recently that have been dismissed in a small number of posts. The first suggestion thread for small ideas had a very good life, reaching almost 5 pages in length, but was sadly abandoned many months ago. So rather than post my small idea into an already choco-block thread, i've decided to bring back the Small Suggestion Thread in this nice shiny 2.0 version! Hopefully this will encourage people to express some of those smaller thoughts they've been having (and you know you have been!), without cluttering the forum. I'm looking forward to reading some of your ideas.

I'll kick things off (such is tradition).

The Riot Shield can be carried by a rebel using only one arm, with a crowbar in the other. This would suggest that the riot shield is relatively light-weight (or rebels are really strong). If a resistance member can carry both a crowbar AND a riot shield at the same time, why is it they can't wield a smaller, single handed weapon such as a pistol (or grenade) with it?

I think it would be better if using the riot shield meant you had no offensive weapon at all. It definitely would throw the balance way off if you were allowed to used ranged weapons with the shield though.

It's a pistol. You are substituting a SMG or shotgun for a pistol and some cover. Having no (offensive) weapon at all just leaves you cowering behind the riot shield unable to help anyone -where's the point? If you are a defender you should be able to benefit the team by holding off large amounts of enemies (other known as 'defending'), not hiding behind a piece of metal praying one of them will stray close enough for a beat down (or that they'll all just go away).

The reason i brought this up is because the defender has little purpose unless there's a combine turrent in the vacinity or someone is being revived. Let's face it, you can't hold off the entire combine force using only a crowbar!

The shield has lots of purpose, even if you had no weapon at all. You provide a mobile cover point for your allies. You can be "defending" your allies by putting your shield in front of them as they shoot from behind you, putting your shield in front of a door, providing a mobile cover point. Even with no weapon, you still have a lot of options for "defending". You really shouldn't be able to hold off the entire combine force by yourself, you should have to rely on teamwork, on your allies, so that you can be "defending" them.

small ideas? how about changing the left rebel elevator from the GM's perspective so it isn't auto-rape for the rebels? I mean all you have to do is place the 3 scanners, metropolice and have them spawn manhacks and then spawn the manhacks and shotgunners to corner them in. then as everyone moves up to rez that one guy you lock them in from behind with more shotgunners. WORKS EVERYTIME. solution? move the manhack spawn (wish I was at home so I could point to where exactly) down the ramp towards the bottom left combine spawn. and make the elevator spawns more even.

I didn't understand a word of that.

Oh, and Braddollar, i understand what you're saying; it's just that it doesn't make sense that the defender can hold a crowbar and not a pistol. Maybe things will appear differently when the weapon system is sorted out?

Active Reload

Active reload has already been a big hit in well known games like Gears of War and Alien Swarm, providing players with more game immersion whilst also forcing them to pay a little more attention to what they're actual doing rather than what they're shooting. Does anyone think Overwatch may do with an active reload system? It could give more functionality to the old HL2 crosshair, or even warrant a new one altogether!

What do people think? Post your thoughts below.

I am perfectly happy without active reload.

But what I am not happy about is having to select the "move troop" button everytime I want to move a group of combine, it wastes time and annoys me. I would like to use a special attack (like how metrocops can release a manhack on que) and then select another troop and move them without having to re-select the "move troop" button again, that button shouldn't even be there, it should be default! any other actions would need a button but not simply moving your troops.

Granted I've not played a lot in the recent patch, but i'm pretty sure you don't -have- to click the move button, you can just right click can't you? at least that's how it used to be.

You don't need to use that button. Just left-click to select, right-click to move.

Small Sugestion : Do I have to join the Team "opt. Overwatch" every new round to be perhaps selected to play as Overwatch or does one time each map sufficient ?
I am asking cause last time I played we were three players on a server and i joined the overwatch team and be selected to play as overwatch. After that round i wanted to play as rebel and was again selected to be the overwatch. After three rounds being overwatch without joining the overwatch team, i have asked myself wether i am unlucky ( three people and noone wants to be overwatch = 33,33 % for being selected ) or joining once the overwatch team sufficient to be on the list of players who want to play as overwatch all the map long, but than i have not found the option to get off the list.

Players need to opt-in every round. If you select Resistance, then that means you've opted out for that round. However, if no one else opts-in for Overwatch, it'll select a player at random.

It does seem a bit odd that you were selected three times in a row. We'll do a bit of testing on our end to see what's going on.
