I'd be glad to start a thread and throw out some ideas tomorrow, after a good think on what features were most useful. To be honest, part of Overwatch's appeal to me is that it reminds me of certain aspects of WiC: the description of calling in rappelling Combine troops and manhacks, along with screenshots of the suppression cannon, appeared to imply some kind of "tactical aid"-like system.

Civilization IV is also incredibly fun, gotten a couple dozen hours out of it.
Sins of a Solar Empire is third.
The only strategy game I never really liked was Dawn of War II. I still gotta try the original Dawn of War series.

I'm a fan of many of the other RTSes mentioned in this thread, but Homeworld is simple the most epic RTS I've ever played.

Europa Universalis III (fun if you play with cheats or else you have to be a real rts player to conquer anything in this game)

My favorite RTS would have to be Starcraft/Starcraft II (Yes, I was in the beta).
The feature that made this my favorite RTS would have to be it's variety of Races (They all had a different play style from the others). In many games, the different sides/races have the same mechanics, but different units. (Ex: The zerg (alien) sacrifice their worker units to create buildings, and the Terran (Human) just build the buildings. This keeps the game fresh, so you can play the game three different ways.
Another aspect I like about the game is that it is very balanced (Moreso in Starcraft II). No race had an advantage. (This seems to be the problem in many RTS games).
As for a feature that can be related to Overwatch, the Matchmaking system was a great feature (SC II). It made it so that you didn't have to face people who would smash your face in, in about two minutes. This was a major flaw in Starcraft I, as the only people who dared to play multiplayer were experts at it, and the rest of the community stayed away from it.
