What Is Your Favourite RTS And Why?

Just to start off, my favourite is Red Alert 2. Its gameplay, while an improvement over the original C&C and Red Alert, is simple in its approach compared to how some popular RTS' function today, yet it isn't simple enough to not offer a wide variety of approaches to attacking and defending. It's visual style and industrial soundtrack please me so and aside from the heartaches of 4+ hour long battles being cut off unexpectedly there were many epic multiplayer experiences to be had, especially if you could get a decent 8 player match on the go! To me, it did everything right before 3D came along and messed with the formula, simple gaming mechanics executed perfectly.

Relic did a good job at balancing teams that played very differently, even more so in the expansion. It did a very good job with squads, intelligent enough to get behind heavy cover if they were just a foot away from it, but they wouldn't wonder off from your positioning either. The expansion also did direct control, from the RTS perspective, allowing the player to take shots on cover that the enemy might be hiding behind, as well as creating light cover for friendly infantry, then letting the tank go on its way and take its own shots. It wasn't a hard game to learn, but it wasn't easy to master either, there was no one dominating tactic or one 'best' playstyle.

The most realistic WWII RTS I've ever seen and the graphics aren't bad for an RTS either
Plus the Direct control feature, you may have heard me praising it, it IS awsome

Space Marine cutting up Orks with a chainsaw-sword? Sounds good.
Of course that's not the ONLY reason, it has lots of good "lore" around it too.

The Dawn of War games play fairly well, they're my favourite of recent RTS titles for sure.

Dawn of War has always been fun for the smaller squad based tactics. Always liked that it more so emphasized your unit control strategy over your build order like Warcraft or Starcraft.
Warcraft 3 has definitely given me the most bang for buck of any RTS due to the awesome custom "maps" that are really more like mods. Unfortunately I don't think Starcraft 2 is going to provide the same bang for buck, and with the Battle.net 2.0 stuff I'm thinking I probably won't even give it a buy.

Right now though, I can't name an RTS that does a better job of creating a derverse, unpredictable, dynamic, immersive, and fun environment than Company of Heroes. Dawn of War was a little to grand of scale and didn't feel quite as visceral as I was hoping, and DoW2 is just a hair too fast and closed by comparison.

It's such an old game, but Blizzard really perfected it. The gameplay is still fun after all these years. Plus, over 10 years later and we're still getting patches from Blizzard.
