I have to say Total Annihilation! It is the predecessor of Supreme Commander. An old RTS but still great, especially for its time. I especially liked the air-planes because of how alive they felt. Compared to planes in other games at the time (starcraft, red alert etc) these very not as static but they were actually flying. Was great to see a group of bomb planes fly over and drop their load or watch fighters dogfight. Very fun to play!

Word, i love Total Annihilation too. Could never master it as well as Red Alert, my brain couldn't handle everything going on, but I had some epic awesome LAN battles on that one for sure.

Honestly, I grew up with Star Trek Armada II. I still have a copy of FleetOps installed on my computer.

I used to play a good amount of World in Conflict. It let me better concentrate on tactics and combat strategy, rather than grand strategy as in other RTS games: which units to order, what combinations/formations/positions to send them out in, when to use their abilities, etc. Each move had immediate, visible consequences, where Starcraft and Age of Empires never seemed to offer me feedback up until the point where my base was getting ruined.

Might be worth starting a discussion about it on here, see what you guys think. Any volunteers? :)

Speaking of which, we're discussing internally how we could go about exactly that. Some people have mentioned interest in hearing the "Overwatch Announcer" voice, but I think some visual elements would be welcome as well.

I'd be glad to start a thread and throw out some ideas tomorrow, after a good think on what features were most useful. To be honest, part of Overwatch's appeal to me is that it reminds me of certain aspects of WiC: the description of calling in rappelling Combine troops and manhacks, along with screenshots of the suppression cannon, appeared to imply some kind of "tactical aid"-like system.

I like the Dawn of War games because i like how it handles resources. Speaking of which, does it say anywhere how this RTS plays? Is there resource gathering or is an auto generated kind of thing?

Age of Empires II is the game that got me into gaming. It's been my favorite strategy game for ages now. Age of Empires III just couldn't top it.
Civilization IV is also incredibly fun, gotten a couple dozen hours out of it.
Sins of a Solar Empire is third.
The only strategy game I never really liked was Dawn of War II. I still gotta try the original Dawn of War series.

I'm a fan of many of the other RTSes mentioned in this thread, but Homeworld is simple the most epic RTS I've ever played.

Well it's no secret that Overwatch will be featuring its own take on the good old RTS, so we'd like to know what your favourite RTS game is. More importantly, why? Try and describe exactly why you find your choice better than the other titles you may have played in the genre. Feel free to mention specifics like a unique gameplay element or even a particular unit that you feel helped improve the game.
Just to start off, my favourite is Red Alert 2. Its gameplay, while an improvement over the original C&C and Red Alert, is simple in its approach compared to how some popular RTS' function today, yet it isn't simple enough to not offer a wide variety of approaches to attacking and defending. It's visual style and industrial soundtrack please me so and aside from the heartaches of 4+ hour long battles being cut off unexpectedly there were many epic multiplayer experiences to be had, especially if you could get a decent 8 player match on the go! To me, it did everything right before 3D came along and messed with the formula, simple gaming mechanics executed perfectly.

My favorite RTS would have to be Starcraft/Starcraft II (Yes, I was in the beta).
The feature that made this my favorite RTS would have to be it's variety of Races (They all had a different play style from the others). In many games, the different sides/races have the same mechanics, but different units. (Ex: The zerg (alien) sacrifice their worker units to create buildings, and the Terran (Human) just build the buildings. This keeps the game fresh, so you can play the game three different ways.
Another aspect I like about the game is that it is very balanced (Moreso in Starcraft II). No race had an advantage. (This seems to be the problem in many RTS games).
As for a feature that can be related to Overwatch, the Matchmaking system was a great feature (SC II). It made it so that you didn't have to face people who would smash your face in, in about two minutes. This was a major flaw in Starcraft I, as the only people who dared to play multiplayer were experts at it, and the rest of the community stayed away from it.
