if Overwatch were to take a new artstyle/universe it would require much more work making new models/textures and therefore the devs would have to focus on that more than other gameplay elements
The impact would be minimal since most of the work would be done by the artists. Our programmers would only need to spend a bit of time implementing new units/items/weapons into the game; for that, we'd likely hire additional help to keep the balance.

EDIT:
I didn't want to say this, but: in your answers, you're all assuming that I'm talking about making changes to the mod. That's not what this is about, so don't think about any specifics. Think in general terms and answer accordingly.

I think the half life 2 art style is kinda boring. I could see so many possibility's like cyberpunk or even Malifaux-esque type of theme. You guys should check Malifaux out. It's a tabletop where it takes themes from 1880's - 1920's and has such complex lore for such a young IP. The owner of the IP calls it Steamvictoriohorrorwestpunk! The owners name is Nathan Caroland. I meet the guy at a convention and he's wicked nice. Their company is still young but perhaps you gentlemen could pitch an idea of using the Overwatch mechanics to make a game with thier IP. Maybe you could get funding and do this full time? Just food for thought. I think their IP would work wonderfully with these mechanics. So would the art style.

Actually, a tron-esque theme for OW might actually be really cool. If there had to be a style switch, that would be the one I would most support.

Well, now I think of it, a Bioshock theme might be good.

BioShock would be fucking BOSS.

Overwatch changed to something like "BioShock: War for Rapture" or "BioShock: Tactics"

Atlas' Splicers vs Andrew Ryan(who is the GM) and his controllable Splicers. Boss.

Did Atlas even have splicers? I sure as hell didn't see anyone fighting along my side.

Atlas and Andrew Ryan were at war. Atlas has his army of splicers, and Andrew had his. Ever hear of the Rapture Civil War? Its when Atlas and Ryan mobilized and turned the city into a warzone. That's why the place looks so fucked up.

In BioShock 1, Atlas and Ryan both want you dead, even if you don't know it. Its explained as how Atlas pulled the strings and made all the splicers(even Ryan's and his own) try and kill you. In BioShock 2, there are all under the control of Sophia Lamb, who was an enemy of Ryan and Atlas. After Atlas is dead as well as Ryan, she took them over and they became her army.

Didn't suchong put some pherimones into the ADAM to make the splicers ally with Ryan? I'm pretty sure Atlas begun the civil war.

That's how Ryan got his army, yes. Atlas also started the civil war, thats right to. Atlas pulled the strings by making you do things and putting yourself in situations to have you killed. You were his pawn.

Well, Bioshock could work out as it has units comparable to overwatchs units.
Combine soldiers > Splicers
Manhacks > Security bot
Sentry > Turret
There could even be bosses in the form of big daddies.

There could be problems having the dynamic water in the source engine and it would need a lot of custom models and textures.

As much as I like BioShock, we'd end up with the exact same issue we have now: a limited variety of units.

You can always add some more units that fit in with the lore, as you can also do with HL2. That's the advantage of a game of your own.

Could always just think of things you wanted to do in in overwatch but couldn't because of the limited units and build a theme around that? theme based of mechanics instead of mechanics based off of a story.

Well, from what I have seen, the gameplay footage is very old. When I am interested in a mod, I first look for gameplay somewhere. Overwatch doesn't have much documentation on gameplay. I would make some myself, but my sound comes out stupid when recording something.
