The year 2012 was a revolutionizing year in biology. The advent of medical nanobots phased-out antibiotics and conventional surgery. It cured myriad of neural diseases, many we didn't even need understand to repair, not to mention it was the end of cancer. Through the course of the next year, the invention of artificial erythrocytes and the "Extra Organ", an artificial organ designed use the natural nutrients your body makes to produce artificial erythrocytes literally made having blood past the age of 27 optional.

In 2014, a nanobot aerosol was manufactured that could be dispersed in diseased areas to cure widespread diseases. The microscopic machines would enter your body through the alveoli of your lungs directly into the blood stream where they will hunt and kill invading bacterium and viruses. By 2015, self-replicating nanobots marked the end of all diseases. Unknown to society, it also marked the end of mankind, as well.

Over the next two years, the U.N. traveled the world and implanted in one out of every 100,000 people a very special artificial gland. It secreted a hormone throughout the entire body that no natural process could generate; a kill code for the nanobot. This meant that these people would never be able to benefit from the miracle that was the nanobot. They said it was so that in the event someone was able to utilize the nanobot as a weapon against humanity, someone would live-on. In truth, it was so that the dwindling medical industry would not completely collapse.

However, someone weaponized the nanobot.

The Dying Hand, a Buddhist extremist group with the objective of finally ending the cycle of reincarnation. They believe in order to do this you must kill the person, but trap the soul in a living body until the it dwindled-away. In order to do this, they engineered the perfect killing machine.

First, they disperse a nanobot aerosol, the nanobots permeate lungs and cycle through the body until finding their way to the brain. Once in the brain, it liquefies it and takes its place. The new robotic brain if capable of thinking at the level of a lower primate and requires the same mixture of compounds carried in a neuron to function. Once the brain is completely established, the neural nanobots replicate and flow through the blood again. Once they hit the lungs, the collect on the alveoli until the zombie exhales, at which point the aerosollated death spreads through the air.
An unintended side-effect was that of anger, the host body recognizes something is wrong and fires all sorts of hormones everywhere. The brain, under an imperfectly biological model, becomes confused and distressed at a subconscious level, which then surfaces at the consciousness as rage. This violent animal rage accidentally lead to a discovery among the walking dead; brains are an excellent source of neural nutrients. After the first few hungry monsters found-out, the rest copied the example much like monkeys copy other successful simians.

You are one of the lucky few that received one of the artificial glands. You found other survivors and refit a high-security prison to keep the undead outside. However, a terrible discovery has been made, there are members of the Dying Hand among you. They will stop at nothing to mercifully halt the world's cycle of reincarnation, that means getting you out of the way.
