INFO for replying to ideas

I am getting tired of people flaming and trashing ideas because they think there OPed or just bad or in some cases because they have a grudge agains a person. SO i am making this to try and stop that.

1. DO NOT think of ideas only in the ways hey break the game but in the ways that they can help it as well.

example: MOLOTOV
what not do do: this would suck because it would do noting more than kill mass amounts of combine and make attacking the rebels a bad idea.
what to do: this isn't a good idea becasue it would be an instant hit grenade unless it didn't directly kill them but just wound.



2. if an idea truly sucks don't reply saying its a peace of shit or something like that you will get heavy flame war.
I really don't need an example for this one

3. using logic to bring down an idea might sound good but its more likely to just anger the person if they have logic behind the idea.
example most of my ideas but my problem is i keep forgetting to put the logic behind them in the first post so i don't count.

4. if the idea suck just don't post let it die.
example see old ideas.

5. DO NOT quote a post that is right above yours(joker) its annoying and having to scroll down just to see what the hell the person replied with is annoying as hell.
example: five dollars says the joker will do this as a reply soon.

6. some people do not take criticism well (me) you can counter this by not only pointing out the bad parts of an idea but also mentioning how it would break the game just saying it is bad isn't going to work with some people you have to explain.
example: molotov
what not to do: this ideas sucks go die in a hole
what to do: this is not the best idea wile it would work in some instances it would be OPed for tight maps, not only that but it would cause some problems with greiffers as you are throwing firewalls around the maps.


I hope this helps some of the problems if no oh well i tryed.

I think you're just being way to sensitive to people not liking your ideas. It sounds to me like you need to learn to take criticism better, not get your panties in a bunch just because they disagreed or refuted your idea. Some time the only thing to really say is "this idea sucks", and that's a person's opinion and they are entitled to have an opinion. Don't take it personally that people think your ideas are poor.

OK. You need to understand that when we "flame" or "trash" your ideas, it means they are not good, and that you need to change something. We don't do it to make you feel bad, because shit like that can get you banned. Really dude, wake up and smell the roses. If it ALWAYS HAS TO BE US doing the wrong thing, maybe you should look at yourself in the mirror.

1: The person making the idea is the one thinking of all the good parts of the idea, and its up to the readers to use an objective eye to see the things wrong with it.

2: Theres no problem with criticism, as long as its backed up. If the criticism is just "this is crap" then it is useless, but if it has reason behind it it is needed.

3: Logic is NEVER a bad thing to have, and feelings should not be spared because of the lack of it.

4: This is directed at me, because i didnt notice the post date of the idea. Im sorry for my unneeded comment, it wont happen again.

5: I don't mind, it helps me because i don't have to go all the way to the top of the page to consider all of the post im replying to. (also, to joker: :thumbup: )

6: Im sorry you don't take criticism well, and I would have included some positives, i just didn't find any. Also, criticism that has substance to it (a good amount of text) usually goes into detail, and has reasoning behind it.

Warbrand2: It's really, really easy to come up with tons of ideas. I could list 20 of them right now that I hadn't even considered before.

The trick is to focus on the good ones (which are rare) and not waste time on the bad-to-average ones. Consider the following:

  • 19 out of every 20 ideas are crap (and the number is probably a lot higher than that)
  • Don't post _every_ idea you get. Try to go through a first round of filtering on your own:
    • Is this really a good idea?
    • As players, would we (all) really benefit from it?
    • Would it be worth the effort it would take the devs to implement it? (i.e. two weeks for a feature that would barely be used isn't the worth the effort)
    • Is this something that would fit in the devs' current dev plan? (i.e. we haven't announced plans to start working on any custom content, so creating a new character model from scratch wouldn't fit our current plans)
  • If an idea passes the above, then you can post it. Wait for feedback from others (they'll filter it according to the points above as well)
  • If they don't find the idea to be clearly written out, try to explain it further
  • If the majority just doesn't find the idea good/useful, decide if it's worth pushing it further or if your time would be better spent focusing on another idea that's getting more positive feedback (see next point)
  • If an idea seems like it's getting some positive feedback, refine it! Every feature that we plan to implement goes through a ton of discussions before we ever touch a line of code (and we change many aspects of it along the way)
  • Once it's refined enough, try to put together a spec sheet. There are countless level designers and probably a few coders in the community; see if any of them would be willing to help you figure out what would be needed (for example, if it's a new entity, make a list of all the keys, inputs and outputs you'd need implemented)
  • etc..

I could go on and on, but I'll stop there.

The most important point is: don't take anything personally. You obviously enjoy the game since you're trying to come up with ways to improve it, but consider that everyone else in the community also enjoys the game, and they want to make sure nothing messes that up. If we didn't thoroughly consider the impact every single feature/change would have, we could royally piss everyone off with an update. We obviously don't want to do that, and neither do you.


One last thing (and please, don't take offence to this): if someone gave you a contract/document/whatever filled with spelling and grammar mistakes, would you even bother reading it? Would that person inspire you with confidence (i.e. would you feel like he knows what he's doing)? I honestly wouldn't.

When you don't take the time/effort to spell-check or proof your text, some readers might feel like you just don't care enough to do so (and that reflects on your ideas as well). Your ideas might seem a lot more appealing if they were properly formatted/spelt. It took me an hour to put this post together. If I had just tossed it together with a CBA attitude, I wouldn't expect you to read it or even consider any of the advice I've written.


I really hope this helps bring the overall stress/anger levels back down a notch on our forums. If any of you have any questions or comments regarding what I wrote, please let me know.


P.S. Always be diplomatic/tactful! No matter how much someone insults you, don't ever insult them back or be anything less than friendly. If you go down that route even once, you'd be damaging your reputation. You'll find that people will hate your ideas just because they think less of you (as is probably the case now).

This is the Internet, people have no reason to like you (actually, I find that this applies to real life too). One wrong move and you're immediately shunned. It'll then take you 20x more effort to get them to tolerate you again (not even like you, just tolerate you). So please, keep that in mind (all of you -- and some of you should probably start working on being tolerated again).

Just to be absolutely clear about the above:

The section referring to being "diplomatic/tactful" is not a suggestion. I'm hoping that the post above will be enough to calm everyone down, but if you choose to ignore it, warnings/suspensions come next.

I'd like to keep these forums a happy place.
