Colaman's Rebel Survival Guide

Hello newcomer or veteran! Welcome to the Resistance!
There are some easy rules to survive this overpowered opponent: The Overwatch.



Beginner tips

1. Try to work as a team. Veterans can show you the way to escape this hell.

2. Share (nearly) everything. You have enough shotgun shells and your mate is out of ammo? Leave him the next ammo spawn. 2 Shotguns are better than one. Or for example if you die, you lose all your grenades and if your teammate would had got some grenades you could still let some combine scum explode! Same for health kits!!

3. Tell your team if and where you are incapacitated.

4. Use the team chat (usually press "U")! The Overwatch knows already enough about us.

5. Don't waste your time. Usually every 15 seconds the Overwatch can spawn units, which will prevent you from reaching the objectives. But also don't get into a trap of combines with low health and low ammo.

6. Stay calm if nearly your whole team is dead. The Overwatch's number of units which spawn will reduce itself when rebels die. See also rule 3 of "Tactics". You can easily revive teammates pressing "E" (the use button) while looking into their shape.

7. Every teammate should look in different directions. So your team can easily survey what is going on and everyone has only a small area to survey and concentrate.

8. When you are a real beginner, you should let important role items for the experienced players, especially the medic role.



Environment

1. You should know the spawns of any items on the map. Especially health kits and grenades can decide between life or death.

2. Take care of exploding generators, doors and others. They can really hurt!

3. Be careful on ow_citadel when you go over the bridge to the central node. Scanners may blind you and then you find yourself falling into the depth.

4. Watch the ground if there are scanner type II near your location. There could be a hopper mine around the corner. If you find a hopper mine, you can sprint near it to activate it and then run away. It's a new way of defusing, clever, huh?



Weapons

1. Keep in mind that combines have a limited range when they start firing, even SMG combines. You can easily kite shotgun combines over wide areas.

2. Use the pistol for long range, smg for mid range and shotgun for short range.



Tactics

1. The combines are some times very focused on their target and may ignore the closest enemy. They tend to lock on and obsess over a single rebel. If you are not the object of their love, then harass the hell out of them.

2. If you recognize that the overwatch tries to recruit an army, split your team a bit up and search for grenades and other explosives which can easily kill a lot of combines. Maybe an experienced rebel could try to scout and spot the location of the ambush or army.

3. Pull combines if you have an advantage. Take cover or get supplies if you have a disadvantage. Killing gives you time. (2 Combines every 15 seconds, if you are alone)

4. Never think you can flee and hide from a combine assault. They will find you and the overwatch see you. The only possibility to hide are dark corners/areas. But only if no combine saw you or the assault got stuck. There is currently no fog of war!



Roles

1. As medic, you should have a good overview over the health and the location of your teammates. Read the chat and watch the minimap to help teammates as soon as possible.

2. As medic, try to stay at 100 health because the medkit ammo regenerate then with double speed.

3. As medic, you should also use your medkit whenever you have 100 ammo and some rebels haven't full health but keep about 30-50 ammo for possible suprising assaults by the overwatch.

4. Your defenders should really use the riot shields. It's perfect to revive teammates and have a mobile cover.

5. "A guy with a shield can be a good way to draw the brunt of combine fire while everyone else sits there and destroys them." - Lieutenant Sherpa

6. Use a primary weapon and your role item. Then fast switch between them in combat. (usually pressing "Q")



Enemies

1. Take care of where you kill scanner type II with hopper mines. If they die, they will drop their mine and it will activates itself soon.

2. You can hear the chopper when it prepares for an attack. This is the last moment you have to find cover before you die.


You can add tips or correct some. I will edit it and add more as soon as I get some new ones.

First of all teamwork, is not that important to win.

with nr. 2 You don't have to share, but if you have 3 grenades then stop scavenging (you only get stuff by taking derutes anyway)

nr. 4 I kinda agree with, however you should have said, take your time to revive everyone, but be quick.

6. needless because you can't have an army in ow_breach (as overwatch), and there ain't grenades in ow_citadel

8. Yes, try asking pixilated punk how to use shields, he's a true strategic shield veteran.

9. you can run for them, as long as you run backwards (or in citadel away from the combines) find the person who are the furthest away and heal him. "Though one guy is stupid, two guys are wise" (- from the Jewish religion i think)

10. for short range use shotgun, for midrange use... shot gun, for long range, guess what? shot gun is still the most effective weapon. only use smg if you are AOA, or if you have smg grenades. (don't use pistol, just don't)

I don't get nr. 3 and 7, but I ain't English, so might be because of that.

for the rest I either have no comment, or (and) agree with

These are some very good points and I'm happy you took the time to help your community. I think the biggest thing about this game in it's current state is timing. Once you have played the game enough it all comes down to time. Time = potential Overwatch damage, therefore, if you reduce the amount of time in the round (by capturing objectives as quickly as possible) you reduce the Overwatch's overall potential damage. This goes for ow_citadel and ow_breach. Also to do with time is timing. Knowing that you just killed all the Overwatch's forces you should know about how long it would take for Overwatch to spawn new units and bring them into battle giving you a great idea as to how long you have to rush forward or pick up supplies. Also, the shield is very important to survival against an experienced GM as there are many ways to change the battle with them and it can quickly turn an Overwatch's overwhelming force into ragdolls. This also requires the other members of the Resistance team to work together properly. Colamans #3 is very important to learn. I have been able to pull off amazing things using this knowledge.

Maybe everything is overstated but I think it is a good orientation.

Why not? Of course you can spawn a lot of combines since beginning of the match at the end of the road.

I don't mean with this point that you are not faster than the combines. I meant that you can't stop a combine assault just with getting out of sight.

Compare how many shotgun shells you need for enemies to kill near you and those who are far away. It's just a waste of ammo. SMG has too much recoil and spraying. Try to shoot a target on really long range. Pistol is the only enough accurate weapon to attack an enemy on this range without wasting ammo.

Thank you. :-> I agree partially with your time argument. On the one hand, you have to hurry to reduce the Overwatch's potential size of the army. On the other hand, a fast rush with less ammo and health can easily be a deadly trap. By the way, killing gives you time. I survived alone a long time against the Overwatch because of only killing combines and get quick health and ammo again. It is just like this: Kill 2 combines every 15 seconds and 2 manhacks every 30 seconds/ or which trap he activate.
I really have a few new rules now. Thanky you. :-) Maybe you could give some more riot shield tips.
And I will later add categories and sort the tips, so you can easily overwatch this. ;-)

Overwatch' intend to look at the group of people so if you are an alone cappa' you wouldn't face any combines + you will be faster finished with the capturing objectives.
If the Overwatch' do look after the single person, the person can just sprint away, and then the Overwatch have wasted time.
that might be team work (to run back to the group and that) but I'll say it's common sense, you are being shot at, fall back.

no spawns in ow_breach activates and deactivates so it's impossible to get an army. And as Pixilated said Time = damage, so if you don't mess around no army will be there

I can do it in 4 shotgun shells, and 10 smg shots and I never use pistol, so from that I used 6 less shots.

Teamwork is extremely important in OW, but in some respects it cannot be. I was a selfish bastard and ran away from my team to get some grenades, 6 other players on my team were killed in a big ambush (everyone but me), due to my selfishness I lived and managed to revive them under fire from a squad of Combine soldiers. So being mean pays off sometimes.

Unless, ofcause, i am playing the Overwatch. Then you should run, since it was probably just a decoy for my troops, that will fall you in your back. While, you may know you will be get attacked in the back, what you don't know, is that i also have ANOTHER bunch of troops in your front, so now you are getting attacked from both sides in a small corridor, with no ways to escape!

Okay, admitted, tactics are fuckin awesome when they work out!

For a first timer (as I was when I just played 3-4 rounds):

1) stick with others, they will show you the way...

2) pistol isn't useful unless you're an accurate shooter... If you're accurate, don't use it close in, either.

3) close in? shotgun, shield. They are your friends.

4) mid range? use what you're comfortable with...

5) the shield is one of the most powerful things you can have... but it will not guarantee that you avoid all damage. Be smart.

6) sometimes, it's better to die and be revived than to use a heal station. Note that timing is key, here... as the combine may rush, and if you're being revived, that's 2 people not fighting.


I only played on ow_citadel, so, these may not be the best pointers for anyone who is a first timer, but... I think they're generic enough that they could help on other maps too...


oh, and also for the newbie: don't be a hero. Unless you know what you're doing, just rushing off to save someone will backfire.

A few other tips

- that said, the combine AI is still pretty stupid and may ignore the closest enemy. They tend to lock on and obsess over a single player. If you are not the object of their love, then harass the hell out of them.
- The pistol is only good in that you can quickly put 18 bullets into the head of a combine soldier.
- don't always bunch up. Having a guy out on the flank can give you an extra pair of eyes to watch other angles. He serves as advance notice and can provide good harassing fire.
- a good shot with an smg grenade is the best way to clear out a large group of AI. Get behind some cover (a vehicle) or on higher ground, and you should do pretty well.

I love the video guide for using pistol. Only real problem with long range pistol sniping is A) the lack of a zoom in functionality (of any kind), and B) the rarity of the combine not being on the move...

That said, I have mostly used pistol at mid-range, since a clip will pretty much always kill at least one of the group coming at my location. :p
